A Philosophy of Mathematics

"We believe that mathematics is a fascinating subject to be explored and enjoyed in its own right. Through mathematics we can explore the nature of numbers, patterns and relationships, shapes and data. It is also a creative activity, requiring not only facts and skills, but also understanding gained through exploration and application, helping to develop the ability to think clearly and logically. Mathematics also provides a means of communication which is powerful and concise. We believe that mathematics provides a powerful way of viewing and making sense of the world which enables us to solve new and real problems. We therefore believe that mathematics is an essential element in a well balanced and broad curriculum and that all students should be given the opportunity to develop an understanding of mathematics and gain confidence in its use so that they are equipped with the skills needed for the future."
