Central to the ethos of Penglais School is the commitment to addressing the learning needs of all of the pupils and in particular those who have been identified as having a Specific learning difficulty [SpLD] and are on the ALN register. Many pupils demonstrate dyslexic tendencies and the school is committed to embedding dyslexia friendliness into every part of the school life. The aim of Dyslexia Support is to help every pupil with dyslexia, or any other specific learning difficulty, to fully achieve their potential.
The aim of the Centre is to develop and increase the skill of each pupil in order that they can access the National Curriculum, to develop skills to match their potential and to improve self-esteem within a relaxed and sympathetic environment.
Dyslexia Support is currently staffed by Mrs Vanessa Busson (Teacher in Charge of the Dyslexia Centre), and teaching assistant, Miss S Hill. Miss W Bell is in charge of Numeracy, and Miss D Hughes-Evans is in charge of SULP. All staff are experienced and specialised teachers of pupils with specific learning difficulties.
The provision of intervention is based on a number of factors including specialist reports and information provided at transition and regular assessments of reading and spelling levels. The number of lessons pupils are seen for depends on their individual needs, those in the smaller class have an increased number of lessons. For example, the small class in Year 7 receive 10 lessons of intervention a cycle throughout Year 7. A small number of pupils will receive support through KS4 and KS5. Pupils withdrawn from mainstream lessons receive intervention lessons depending on standardised scores achieved in assessments or a large discrepancy between their reading and spelling abilities. Pupils receiving intervention are screened using the LUCID Assessment System for Schools to assess special needs in literacy and to identify SpLDs and dyslexia.
The learning environment addresses not just academic needs but also the building of trust and emotional wellbeing; many pupils with SpLD suffer from loss of confidence, lack of self-esteem and disengagement. Using a variety of cumulative, structured learning programmes and interactive, multi-sensory, supporting activities, students are encouraged to rebuild to discover their natural learning ability. Confidence and self-image are vital in learning.
Ultimately the aims of The Dyslexia Support Centre is to provide a happy, supportive and caring environment in which those pupils who are not reaching their potential will be motivated to learn and progress.Ideally, this would lead to pupils making sufficient progress for them to be capable of fully accessing the mainstream curriculum and to no longer require intervention with the Dyslexia Support Centre.
A range of skills are taught across the department including:
- Literacy Skills - reading, spelling, comprehension and handwriting
- Keyboard Skills
- Numeracy Skills - the four rules of number, tables techniques, money and time
- Organisational Skills - memory, thinking and listening skills
- Social Skills
Homework from Basic skills department
Formal homework may be a short task of no more than 20 minutes, however reading at home is actively encouraged, watching of TV programmes such as the News for vocabulary extension together with occasional learning of common words, written in pupil's planners.
Year 7 and 8 pupils are screened for Literacy Skills on entry to the school. If necessary, they are placed on the ALN register and withdrawal time is arranged accordingly
Pupils in Year 7-9 are given reading and spelling tests annually and the ALN Register is updated. Those pupils assigned to the Dyslexia Centre and placed on suitable individual learning programmes. The test are used as evidence for possible referrals and to inform the planning of out teaching programmes.
We also screen all pupils using Lucid Exact to help highlight possible issues with literacy skills and phonological processing. If the results of the screeners suggest that further screening is necessary we will work closely with you. All of Year 7 will be screened using Lucid Exact on entry. Assessment for special consideration in external examinations is carried out in line with the JCQ guidelines using the above tests together with other diagnostic tests.
Numeracy support is organised by the Maths department and the names of pupils are supplied to the Centre for inclusion on the ALN register.
The Centre helps Dyslexic pupils with strategies for learning tables and with time and money skills as well as going over number bonds 1-20.
Number games are used to develop basic number bonds and to build up confidence with numbers.
